Rob Ayling writes:
"Thom the World poet, is an old mate of mine from way back in my history. Even pre-dating Voiceprint, when I was running "Otter Songs" and Tom's poetry tapes and guest appearences with Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth, Mother Gong are well known and highly regarded. It just felt right to include a daily poem from Thom on our Gonzo blog and when I approached him to do so, he replied with in seconds!!! Thom is a great talent and just wants to spread poetry, light and positive energy across the globe. If we at Gonzo can help him do that - why not? why not indeed!!" (The wondrous poetpic is by Jack McCabe, who I hope forgives me for scribbling all over it with Photoshop)
WHEN THE CIRCUS SET UP IN OUR SUBURB
We would sneak down to see the tents go up, the poles knocked
in,
the
animals in cages, the exotic human beings. Our life needed the colors of
transients.
Every
boy wanted to run away to the circus. Dancing ponies, acrobats, clowns, sawdust
circles
Hoop-la, roustabouts and ringmasters - all costumed and weirdly from other
worlds.
Magic
is temporary. We knew these strangers were here to enchant us. And to leave
us
For
we could no more live with them than they could live with us.
MAGIC
SAVES, SERVES, PROTECTS
I knew this girl who wore
a Jewish star on her forehead (she was not Jewish)
One
day, during a difficult Law examination at Cloudland Ballroom (long
demolished)
she
came in wearing a sheet, stood up on the desk, took off her sheet, and (quite
naked! said -
DOWN
WITH EXAMS!
We were all given a PASS in that subject (due to
shock)
(I would never otherwise have passed Mercantile Law... (even
now)
VIOLINIST IN OUR COFFEE SHOPwould play all night-would pitch his frequency to your listening
would soften the very air we were breathing/long remembered dreaming
at Festivals, another gardener would set up a circle and serve herbal tea to all
Then there was the FREE STORE - rule was - "you put in, you take out" (lasted a year)
and that LOVE DONATIONS bakery, reminding us all what a true currency is
affiliative freeflowing affection/unconditional as air /giving as the gift/Release!
